The annual California Crown BMW Spec E30 race between NASA NorCal and the NASA SoCal chapter, headed by Ryan Flaherty, was held this year at the epic Laguna Seca racetrack.

Geoff Sykes qualified 7th, quickest of the SoCal group, but because it was a cool day, he had opted to not fill the Coolshirt system, which caused the car to be underweight and Sykes had to start in 37th grid position as a penalty.

The up side was that Sykes avoided being in the middle of the first lap mess at turn 1 which took several cars out and was able to drive an inspired race, passing a total of 25 cars, presumed to be a series record.

The Midnight Oil car, prepared and tuned by Seth Scally, ran strong and flawlessly all weekend. “The #75 SE30 ran like a tank on rocket fuel. It didn’t go completely in our favor but we made the best of it,” said Geoff. “I am proud to be one of the SoCal NASA Spec E30 race group. It’s a close knit group and we race close and fair.”
